Kickstarting Backstory Cards, creating Character Histories

The previous Kickstarter I recommended was Those Who Play is a narrative-focused RPG.

June is shaping up to be a good month for Kickstarter. Here I am with another one for you. Backstory Cards is created by Ryan Macklin, the co-creater of the award-winning Fate Core System and The Dresden Files Roleplaying Game. The campaign page describes the game as follows;

Backstory Cards blend your characters and setting concept into an intriguing set of relationships and history. It’s tailor-made for games where the Player Characters already know each other – from fantasy adventurers to star marines, from supernatural beings who share the same city to global-hopping trouble-shooters.

This deck of cards works well with most roleplaying games, including GM-less ones. It also includes how to directly integrate Backstory Cards into Fate Core and Fate Accelerated‘s character creation.

Overall, I am very happy with the way that I run character generation. However, there is always room for improvement, and these Backstory Cards look like a great way to add depth to character history. A video on the kickstarter page shows the cards in action, and I am sure my Players are going to love the guided improvisation that these cards facilitate.

Funding for Backstory Cards closes Saturday July 19th. The campaign has been storming towards its target. There are Backer number bonus goals as well as the standard Stretch Goals. Even at this early date, the campaign looks like being a bargain as it should smash many of these Stretch Goals.

Take a look at Backstory Cards to add depth to your character generation process.

Happy Gaming
