The first Reading Around of the new year has a challenge for you.
I want to highlight the 2016 Reading Challenge launched by Anne at her Modern Mrs Darcy blog. I try to read widely, and this sort of challenge is an interesting way to encourage me to attempt some varied books.
The Reading Challenge is summarised in the accompanying graphic. Anne also offers an explanation on her blog:
If you need structure in choosing your books but don’t want to be pinned down. If you want to stretch a bit instead of forever reading the same author/genre/plot line.
For the MMD challenge, read 12 books in 12 different categories in 12 months.
There are some interesting categories in this list, and certainly some unusual ways to choose books. At this stage, I have no idea where to start, or where this challenge may take me. However, it could be interesting, so I wanted to share the quest with you. I will be posting updates here on Tales of a GM.
One caveat, before I sign off. Way back when I was a Bookseller at Hatchards Heathrow, I learnt to give up on unrewarding books. After pushing my way through several books I was not enjoying, I realised that life is too short to wade through a book I do not like. If a book cannot grip me in 50 pages, it probably never will.
Thus, some books may be started but not finished. At this stage of the year, with barely two weeks gone, I hope to complete a book matching each of these categories. I expect this to mean starting more than 12 books.
Follow my progress through the year.
