Throughout February, I am running the FebShoMo project, a method of brainstorming outlines for stories. As part of this process, I post regular updates about what I create. Hopefully this means daily, but weekends are often too busy for much blogging.
My brainstorming notes are raw ideas, and may not develop into anything useful. Or they may form the core of a future RPG plot. Either way, I cannot share too much with you here, for fear of spoiling the final story. Instead, I present an edited selection of my brainstorming
What if . . . Cats could operate technology?
In my final visit to the What if list, I return to where I began the week, with cat stories. Living with three cats, they are often on my mind. This particular idea was born in the actions of Huginn, our newest cat. He seems fascinated by technology, and will run across the room to sit close to my laser printer when it is running. He also likes to watch me change DVDs in the player.
Taking his actions as a starting point, I brainstormed what it might be like to live with a cat who operates technology. Clearly, this is a light-hearted story, and probably suited to a children’s book. The tone here seems different from my Day 8 story, so these two ideas are probably not going to appear together.
Today’s brainstorming lead more to a setting than a plot, which has happened before. The final story might be more about observing the humorous setting, rather than adding a complex plot on top. The current outline is more a list of situations, so further brainstorming of character and limited plot are needed. More work is required for this initial concept.
What would you create with this idea? Can you see a different story? What setting does this concept suggest to you? Let me know what you think.
