Shadows of Ulubrae, Chapter 7, Part 1

  • Another character creation session
  • Half-term prep
  • Bonus time for Story Elements

As so often happens, all my worry about the game session came to naught. The four Players spent the majority of the session working through their character generation. The character creation process has been streamlined, but remains an intensive process. The Players’ unfamiliarity with the procedure contributed to this. A lot of time was also devoted to hammering out specific abilities. I have been burnt by overly-broad abilities in the past, so I carefully consider each new ability description. This all takes time, and meant we did not begin the story arc.

While I am sad we did not roleplay on Saturday, this was probably for the best. I did have a simple instigating incident ready to use, but it was rushed. I had devoted a lot of time to the character creation process during my prep time last week. This effort was all needed, but left me little time for brainstorming the plot. This week I can focus a lot better on starting the story arc. At least I could, if it was not half-term. The presence of the boys in the house means more noise and less focus.

Regardless, this is what I have to work with. Earlier in the week I wrote up my notes from the last session, presenting an overview of the first four heroes. Now I need to complete the usual session outline, along with a variety of story elements. Many of my reference sheets for the new story arc also need completion. These sheets may have to wait, as time is tight and the needs of the plot are uppermost. Next session really should be a hybrid of character creation and roleplaying. I will monitor the time a lot better, and split the session to cover both options. We can always return to the final parts of character creation another week. We are all eager to begin exploring the setting and the new heroes.

I doubt I will find much quiet time tomorrow, but working in the evening may be the answer. I just hope it will not require a late night.

Happy Gaming

Phil
