Songs of Ulubrae: Chapter 10

A Shadow of Cloud

Afternoon, Quarryday, Hunt Week, Delve Season, 1017.

Umiaq and Adlartok headed back out into the bright light of Sol Invictus. Umiaq quickly found Candidus Nonus’ stall. The hobbit tinker reluctantly acknowledged the names on Umiaq’s list as members of the underground railroad. Candidus explained how the name Vibius Primus was code for a group of trollkin, and not an individual.

After a quick visit to a tailor, Umiaq and Adlartok returned to the embassy. The crowd had dispersed and a lot more legionaries patrolled the streets. As the pair discussed Arrluk’s cache of treasures, Umiaq took the chance to embarrass Adlartok. Umiaq snatched a stolen vial from Adlartok’s burlap sack. Immediately, Adlartok’s trollkin leapt to his defence, but Umiaq quickly subdued them with his cloak.

H09 encouraged Adlartok to drink the vial of blood, despite Arrluk’s dire warnings about the skull curse. Once he drank the blood, Adlartok was overcome with hunger, and rushed off to the dining area. The only thing he could find to eat was one of the Embassy staff trollkin, who he quickly consumed.

Outside, a gnome crier announced the new curfew. Regardless, the four heroes headed back out into the tunnels to repair Arrluk’s damaged chamber. The human was shocked to see the state of his previously secret chamber. H09 invoked his destiny to begin reading the many scrolls of Arrluk’s painstaking autobiography. Once Arrluk wrestled these scrolls away from H09, the conversation turned to the Bleeding Skull Curse.

The only solution for Adlartok was to return all four vials to the Skull. This meant vomiting up both the remains of the trollkin and the semi-digested blood. The empty elven vial magically grew into a cauldron to accommodate the increased volume.

Adlartok invoked his destiny to have everyone in the chamber cursed by the Bleeding Skull. For a moment, everyone heard the grating tones of the Skull in their head. Then Arrluk invoked his destiny to replicate the ritual he learnt in the Temple of Elemental Evil and placate the Skull. The worse elements of the curse were lifted from the Heroes.

This really was fun! Great write-up too.

      Hi Steve,

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed both the game and the report. As we play more sessions, there are more events I can weave back into the story again later. I like these callbacks to previous actions, and they help ease my prep process.

      All the best

So there was thievery, semi-cannibalism, curfew-breaking, vomitting, and everyone ended up cursed. I think I may have to conduct a few disciplinaries when I return to my office…

      Hi Rhy,

      Uhm, pretty much.

Although, there will only be curfew-breaking if the Heroes choose to travel back to the Embassy tonight. I expect them to do so, but until that happens nobody has yet broken a curfew.

There are probably also multiple infringements of possession of magical items legislation, but who is counting.

Finally, the Skull curse was lifted, for the most part . . .

Also there was the far-more-significant crime of not looking debonair and elegant and therefore the trip to the tailors.

What a wonderful way to catch up on the sessions that I miss.

    Hi Caroline,

Glad this helped you to catch up. At least Helegion will be spared the angry meeting with Sartokna!

    See you soon
