Songs of Ulubrae: Chapter 12

Most Bitter Wrong

.

Morning, Craftsday, Hunt Week, Delve Season, 1017.

A city guard arrived at the Troll Embassy with a message for Adlartok. Centurion Orosius has sent word of “troll trouble” in the Shrine to Kyger Litor. Adlartok collected Sartokna, who warned him further about his consumption of her beloved embassy trollkin. The pair met Arrluk, then flew down to Lower Ulubrae in the lightning sled.

A crowd of refugees were gathered outside the Shrine Hill. The trio of Heroes landed a distance away, then walked back to the Shrine. As they neared the crowd, sounds of angry troll bellowing floated out of the Shrine.

Orosius explained to Adlartok how a troll was in a berserk rage within the Shine. Lights and refugee possessions were smashed, and a patch of darkness had been illegally formed within the Shrine. As a personal favour to Adlartok, Orosius wanted him to deal with the raging troll.

Just as the Heroes were about the enter the Shrine, they spotted Helegion in the crowd. The winged elf joined them as they entered the sacred hill. The patch of magical darkness centred on the location of the empty plinth. Shouts and curses emerged from the darkness.

Adlartok entered the darkness, to see Kanuq stomping on bedding rolls and baskets of possessions. Immediately, he felt his own anger rise within him. Adlartok’s divine parentage suddenly overwhelmed him, and he joined Kanuq in the orgy of violence.

While Sartokna and Arrluk debated what to do, Helegion entered the darkness and loosed a crossbow bolt at Kanuq. He followed up this attack by charging towards the angry troll. Adlartok invoked his destiny to have Helegion swing wildly and smash a dwarven glow globe. The sudden flash of light temporarily stunned the trolls.

Arrluk prepared to calm Kanuq with assurances about the troll’s missing casket. Adlartok spoilt this attempt by blurting out the casket had been destroyed. Fearing the carnage from a rampaging troll in Lower Ulubrae, Sartokna invoked her own destiny. Egged on by Adlartok, Sartokna persuaded Kanuq to calm down by emphasizing their pack status. After a moment’s pause, Kanuq embraced Sartokna, his rage dissolved by the bonds of pack loyalty.
