Shadows of Ulubrae, Chapter 16, Part 1

  • 16 city factions
  • Changing the tone of the game
  • Learning Dungeon World

The session on Saturday had a great turnout, with six Players joining me. We played two rounds of the DramaSystem creation, which meant 16 political factions in Ulubrae. Two external factions were introduced, and an interesting selection of city factions highlighted. As ever with the collaboration, the result is far more varied than if I had created the factions alone. My Players showed their amazing creativity once again.

The focus for my prep this week is now the Dungeon World interlude. The Heroes are about to venture forth from the city, into the wilds of the Underdark. Thanks to their brainstorming, this is even more dangerous now. To reflect the change in tone, we are switching rules.

This will be my first Powered by the Apocalypse game, so it could be a steep learning curve. As ever, I try to learn a new set of rules by reading the text and making notes. The aim is to convert the existing Heroes into the class-based Dungeon World characters. This too needs attention.

The bulk of our next session could be character conversion, but I also need a couple of story events planned. Maybe a simple challenge or two, just to ease us all into the new rules. All of which makes for a long list of tasks for this afternoon. I expect the Dungeon World prep may overspill into tomorrow.

Looking at the bigger picture, I hope to run more PbtA games as interludes later. Thus, time invested here can help me run interesting games later. I just need to work hard this week.

Happy Gaming
