- Dungeon World prep
- Twelve monsters
- Last-minute scenario prep
The focus for my game prep this week was readying myself to run Dungeon World. Learning a new set of rules is always a lengthy process. Dungeon World was no exception. I feel I am close enough for an initial session.
However, that was not all I needed to prepare. I am busy making note cards for at least 12 different monsters to throw at the Heroes. I expect to improvise my way through the session, but I need notes to cope with the more crunchy rules. These cards are only the start of the notes I need for the session. Tonight I must find time for the session outline and a broad plot outline for the Heroes’ quest. I have ideas for the target of the quest, and some of the foes who will oppose the Heroes. Thus, it should not take me too long to work through this prep tonight.
Much of the focus for tomorrow’s session will be character generation and maybe a brief introduction to the mechanics. It would be cool to run an encounter or two at the end of tomorrow, just to familiarise ourselves with the Dungeon World rules. Before the game, I probably should skim through my notes again. I also need to walk the Players through the character creation process. We do not play in a class-based system, so it could be a long discussion as the Players assign the classes to themselves.
Despite the amount of work remaining, I am excited to try Dungeon World. Hopefully the Players will adjust, and we can settle into a run of several weeks playing a different style of game. I am also excited to see how the Heroes grow through the interlude.
The Prep in Progress series are short summaries of my prep for the ongoing Tales of the Hero Wars campaign.
