Writing Goals, 30th April, 2017

Hi Everyone,

Just as we are settled into the school routine, a Bank Holiday comes along to spoil my rhythm. To make the weekend even stranger, my wife is working today. Thus, is feels like a school holiday today, and tomorrow will be the Sunday routine. I will try to snatch moments of quiet today, between caring for the boys.

Previously on Tales of a GM:

  • 2 hours – Primary Goal – Fantasy Mook Traits pdf launch
  • 2 hours – Secondary Goal – Webcomic compilation pdf
  • 1 hour – Social Media – Visit different Forums and write five posts or comments
  • 2 hours – Write, edit & post long blog article
  • 30 mins – Weekly Task – Plan
  • 1 hour – General Fiction
  • 2 hours – Fiction – Write FebShoMo first draft
  • 1.5 hours – Building SF setting

Last week was a lot more productive for me. The big news was the launch of Fantasy Mook Traits, the second pdf in my Table Tools line:

This is a big item to cross off my list, which always feels satisfying. The first draft of the webcomic compilation text is close to completion, so progress is being made there too. Spurred on by the launch of one pdf, I am keen to finish the next one, and put momentum into my publishing routine.

The fiction writing was not quite as successful. The current FebShoMo first draft is growing slowly, as I think and research as I write. Some drafts are like that. However, the initial idea has now been split into two books, which is exciting. The SF setting notes are finished, and will be the foundation for the brainstorming this week.

Elsewhere, a lot of my week focused on learning a new set of rules for roleplaying. Yesterday we played our first session of Dungeon World, my first attempt at a Powered by the Apocalypse game. Most of the session was devoted to translating the existing Heroes into the new rules. The Players seemed happy with the new versions of their Heroes, and we even ran through a couple of encounters to ease us into the system. A great start.

Moving forward, my week is a little disrupted by the Bank Holiday weekend. As a reward for a bonus day of childcare, I am skipping the chores on Tuesday, to give myself a full day of writing. After the long weekend, this should quickly build momentum for the rest of the week. My game prep will be a lot less than last week, so I am hopeful for a productive week:

  • 3 hours – Primary Goal – Promote Top 40 Sites
  • 2 hours – Secondary Goal – Webcomic compilation pdf
  • 1 hour – Tertiary Goal – Dice Photos
  • 1 hour – Social Media – Visit different Forums and write five posts or comments
  • 1 hour – Write, edit & post long blog article
  • 30 mins – Weekly Task – Plan
  • 1 hour – General Fiction
  • 2 hours – Fiction – Write FebShoMo first draft
  • 1.5 hours – FebShoMo SF brainstorming

Another set of new tasks this week. I am trialling a new method of promoting my Top 40 sites article, which should raise the profile of the blog. I am sure promotion is one area where I need to work harder, so this week I will devote attention to it. The webcomic will finally take the top slot next week. The extra time this week also brings back the tertiary goal slot. I expect a lot of juggling of my time.

See how I performed here

Wishing you a productive week

Phil
