Songs of Ulubrae: Chapter 20

What is it but Nightfall?

Dusk, Lawsday, Communication Week, Delve Season, 1017.

A strange red light shone forth across Ulubrae, emanating from a slim red tower in the Altarium Quarter. This light fought with the diminishing orange glow of the Temple of Sol Invictus. The red light also sent a wave of malevolence across the city. Many trolls reacted badly to this light.

At the Sanatorium, Adlartok was discomforted by the scratchy red light. His company of Zorak Zorani trollkin responded even worse, and began growling aggressively. This unexpected switch in mood also affected Arrluk, who changed his mind about the Sanatorium now he had arrived at the looming building.

Adlartok tried to guide Arrluk into the Sanatorium, but the veteran responded violently. The troll’s initial response was to negotiate. Yet the continued red light from the tower took its toll, and Adlartok quickly lost his temper. Aided by his near-berserk trollkin, Adlartok violently threw Arrluk into the Sanatorium so hard, the human was injured in the process.

Meanwhile, at the Embassy, Mangok the trollkin was enraged by the vile red light. Helegion and Hildeboldus quickly subdued the frothing trollkin. The other trolls in the Embassy reacted poorly to the strange red light, and the natural darkness of the Embassy thickened protectively around them.

As the door to the Sanatorium slammed shut, the Zorani trollkin ran amok. Adlartok joined in the frenzy of rioting. By the time the riot ran out of steam, two gnomes and one trollkin were dead. Adlartok and his allies left a trail of destruction across the Fabarium Quarter, while the authorities were focused on the upper level.

Ulubrae returned to the normal night-time levels of lighting, and the curfew was back in force. Unsure how to continue, Adlartok simply collected up the three corpses into a bag. Then a patrol of the City Watch appeared. Adlartok was about to defend himself, when the Senior Legionary revealed himself to be the troll’s shadowy contact. The dwarf took the bag and vanished back into the shadows. Relieved, Adlartok hurried back to the Embassy.
