- Prepping the temple
- Finding a map
- The 10 Scene Plot
Inevitably, my game prep on Wednesday only progressed slowly. Working in the summer holiday was always going to be an issue. My challenge is heightened this week by the need to prepare a towering temple complex. The last session ended with the Heroes storming into the mysterious temple. I therefore need to prepare for the Heroes pushing onwards into the temple. These large locations require more prep than my usual brief notes on story elements.
My first challenge was to find a map, which proved relatively simple. My initial response is to check my small collection of awesome Dyson Logos maps. None of those were suitable for a tall tower, so I tried Google and found a perfect map to use.
Possession of a good map helps me visualize the layout of the tower. This is a large building, but I do not want to create a room-by-room dungeon crawl. Thus, my favoured method is to prepare a 10 Scene Plot for the tower. This is another one of my pre-printed forms I can fill in. Once again, this form gives me a narrative and organizational structure to my prep. The details of the tower, however, now need completion.
This is my task for today, along with the final details on the Session Outline Sheet. I can draw from the events of the previous session, and our earlier brainstorming, to fill a few of these ten scenes. For the remainder, I must create encounters with the residents of the tower. I must also consider what the Heroes want to gain from this exploration, and possibly provide a few clues about what is happening in this plot thread.
This is a lot to work through, but I have bonus writing time today.
The Prep in Progress series are short summaries of my prep for the ongoing Tales of the Hero Wars campaign.
