- Dead and Dying Heroes
- Dungeon World Prep
- Time pressures
Saturday’s HeroQuest game was full of drama. The session consisted of one, super-extended battle, as the Heroes split up in the face of strengthening defences in the Red Tower. Yet, they resolved to stand their ground, and even split up the party. My warnings came true, one Hero died, and another is dying. Only a desperate race to find a particular fungal cure can save the dying Hero.
So, that is what we are doing for next session. As established previously in the story, when the Heroes leave Ulubrae, then we play under the Dungeon World rules. I had not expected this, and packed away my folder of Dungeon World rules. On Sunday I rummaged through the boxes in the garage, and found the folder right at the bottom of the box. Anyway, I now have the handouts and prepared notes. Thus, I can prepare for the next session.
As I want to keep the pressure up on the Heroes, this mini-quest needs to be achievable in a single session. Thus, a couple of encounters is my limit. A quick Five Scene Plot should suffice. I am not proficient at setting challenge levels for Dungeon World, nor is there so much scope for GM intervention when luck turns against the Heroes. With the life of one Hero on the line, I need to judge the challenge properly.
August is far too busy, so I am already behind on the game prep. I need to invest the bulk of my free time tomorrow to setting up the game. Not only do I need to complete the admin from the last session, but I need to weave together a suitable plot for Dungeon World. Now that I have my notes, it should not take too long.
The Prep in Progress series are short summaries of my prep for the ongoing Tales of the Hero Wars campaign.
