Songs of Ulubrae: Chapter 24

Her Voice Grew Shrill

Noon, Marchday, Truth Week, Delve Season, 1017.

The situation in the Red Tower was rapidly deteriorating for the Heroes. Adlartok heard more footsteps pounding up the stairs towards him. Meanwhile, Sartokna and Hildeboldus, further up the spiral stairs, heard yet more bats approaching. Another wave of red light pulsed over the Heroes. Hildeboldus tried to fight off the light with comforting darkness, only to fumble his runic invocation.

A small portal opened on the staircase, spitting out four small darkness shadows, which swirled to attack Hildeboldus. Almost unnoticed, the warped portal also drew Helegion to the Tower. The human, troll and elf fought the angry shadows, as the bats flew down towards them. During this fight, Sartokna sought to invoke her Moon Rune, only to have that corrupted by the Red of the Tower.

Adlartok wrestled the corpse of the giant bat into position, then used it as a ram to attack the approaching guards. Meanwhile, Mangok continued searching the Red Tower, finding more clothes than he had ever owned.

The darkness elementals were quickly dispatched. Helegion retreated down the stairs to the second level of the Tower. He quickly found Mangok, who was very surprised to see him. Adlartok pushed the guards down the stairs ahead of him.

The Heroes remained unsure how to best escape the malevolent tower. A cloud of blood-sucking bats reached Sartokna and Hildeboldus, who slowly retreated back down the stairs. Helegion easily found the window and balcony, but there was no sign of the embassy lightning sledge. Adlartok, however, remained convinced the best route out of the Tower would be through the front doors.

Hildeboldus lost a lot of blood to the bats, but was slowly shrinking the swarm. Yet, he could hear another giant bat approach down the stairs. Helegion flew out of the Tower as Sartokna retreated to the window. Hildeboldus invoked his destiny to bravely rush up the stairs to hold off the giant bat, hoping his noble sacrifice would save his friends and embarrass absent Arrluk.

Sartokna tried to climb down the hanging rope, but it could not bear her weight. Helegion invoked his destiny to swoop down and rescue the falling troll just in time. Adlartok continued pushing the corpse down the stairs, to confront five guards in the lobby. Mangok, waiting to help Adlartok, invoked his destiny to have a dwarf bang on the doors and distract the guards.

Even this was not enough, as the lone troll was almost overwhelmed by the guards. Adlartok fled up the stairs, needing the help of both Mangok and Helegion to escape the Red Tower. However, the troll was dying from his wounds, needing an obscure fungus to heal him his corrupted wounds.
