August means the #RPGaDay program is live. We are now in the fourth week of this month-long series filling my schedule. Sadly, the questions circle back on themselves a lot this year. The RPG-a-day project is hosted again at Brigade Con blog, where you can find the full list of questions.
What are your essential tools for gaming?
Top of the list of essential tools are the dice. HeroQuest only uses a d20, of which I have many. I regularly roll a d16 for outcomes, a d6 for choosing random Heroes and a d12 for generating ratings for location aspects. The d16 and d12 are part of my varied house rules for HeroQuest.
Limiting myself to essentials, as a GM I also need my stack of halved index cards with encounter prompts. We use a range of cards during the game, but the only essential ones are my Skuld cards, another source of useful random input into the game. Writing tools and paper are the final essentials, but these are easy to source.
I fill my Bag of Holding with GM kit every week, so there are a lot more items used in the game. I guess everyone needs dice, pen and paper. Thus, my highlight essential is my deck of Skuld cards.
