August means the #RPGaDay program is live. We are now in the fourth week of this month-long series filling my schedule. Sadly, the questions circle back on themselves a lot this year. The RPG-a-day project is hosted again at Brigade Con blog, where you can find the full list of questions.
Which film/series is the biggest source of quotes in your group?
As a British gamer of a certain age, I am very wary of film references. Previous experience has shown how unfettered Monty Python quotes totally undercuts the tone of the campaign and leads to disaster. I even warn against this behaviour in our Social Contract. On the whole, my group does not indulge in quotes. Part of this is probably due to the broad age range of Players. Given the thirty year spread in ages, we tend to lack the common background to bounce quotes off each other.
Searching hard for an answer, I am drawn to the Red Dwarf TV series. I may share quotes from this series with Phil-the-artist, but I doubt whether any of the other Players make the connection. Given the potential harm to the tone of a game from extended quotes, it is probably for the best that the group does not indulge in this practice.
