Writing Goals, 24th September, 2017

Hi Everyone,

Well, the builders rolled up on Monday and made short work stripping downstairs back to an empty shell. They are making fast work demolishing a wall and digging up the floor. It has been a noisy, dusty week.

Previously on Tales of a GM:

  • 1 hour – Primary Goal – Planar pdf
  • Bonus – October Blog plan
  • 1 hour – Social Media – Visit different Forums and write five posts or comments
  • 2 hours – Write, edit & post long blog article
  • 30 mins – Weekly Task – Plan
  • 1 hour – General Fiction
  • 2 hours – First Draft Chapter Book
  • 30 mins – Fiction Planning

Inevitably, I had underestimated the level of noise and general disruption caused by the building work and living between two houses. It is a struggle to achieve anything in the evenings and I cannot rely upon more than an hour of uninterrupted writing time through the day. Thus, I only managed three writing sessions for the fiction but completed all my other goals. Under the circumstances, this was a good achievement.

A lack of childcare and the need to supervise additional building work meant there was no game yesterday. I found time for a little game prep, but it was probably just as well I was not running HeroQuest this weekend. It is always sad to skip a session, but I am currently tired and cranky, so not at my best.

In the light of my struggles last week, I have trimmed back my schedule for this week. I learned long ago how much better it is to exceed a light schedule than fight to meet a demanding one. Self-care is at a premium, so I can be excused a moderate set of goals. Here is the reduced schedule for this week:

  • 1 hour – Primary Goal – December Blog plan
  • Bonus – Planar pdf
  • 1 hour – Social Media – Visit different Forums and write five posts or comments
  • 2 hours – Write, edit & post long blog article
  • 30 mins – Weekly Task – Plan
  • 1 hour – General Fiction
  • 1 hour – First Draft Chapter Book
  • 30 mins – Fiction Planning

I also realized launching a big project for the blog at the end of this week was too ambitious. The project is now bumped back to December, giving me more time to prepare. The project is receiving attention now as I want to be ready for the delayed launch, and it is best to invest time early when I do not know how long it might take. As I settle into the building routine, I hope this revised schedule will keep me working without adding to my stress levels.

Wishing you a productive week

Phil
