September 2017 Reviewed

All the way back in January, I posted my Writing Resolutions for 2017.

I keep these goals in focus by writing monthly updates about my progress. The original post outlined four categories of resolution:

  • Blogging Resolutions
  • Freelance & Publishing Resolutions
  • Fiction Resolutions
  • Gaming Resolutions

The boys returned to school, but by mid-September, the house had been taken over by builders. I know it will be worth it in the end, but I struggle to write.

Blogging Resolutions

September’s traffic figures were good, stepping up from the two previous months. This was very encouraging, as I think my numbers for 2017 will be a drop from 2016. However, my rate of posting dropped off heavily from the high of August. Preparation for the building work was frantic, and things did not improve once work began. Thanks to the traffic boost, I managed a decent score in this area. Blogging score 4/5.

Freelance & Publishing Resolutions

September should have brought an increase in productivity thanks to the boys returning to school. This year my childcare was replaced with chores surrounding the building work. A couple of weeks saw a little free time for writing, where I kept my planar pdf project alive. Another month of limited progress means a low score. Freelance score 2/5.

Fiction Resolutions

The two weeks of boosted writing time brought a little better progress for my fiction writing. Careful thought over the summer means I have revised my plan of action. I bought the new edition of The Children’s Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook and outlined my next story. This meagre effort is an improvement on August. Fiction score 2/5.

Gaming Resolutions

September saw a victorious end to the Summer Gaming Challenge. I met my revised target of 100 games over the whole summer. This alone is worth a few points. However, board gaming promptly stopped once the boys returned to school, as my time was demanded by other things. We roleplayed twice, but there were too many game-free weekends for my liking. In celebration of the Summer Gaming Challenge, I award myself an average score in an otherwise poor month. Gaming score 3/5.

September 2017

The total for the month is a disappointing 11/20. Too much of my time was taken up by chores, a trend which continues into October. Living with the building work is stressful and distracting. I fear October will be just as poor.
