Shadows of Ulubrae, Chapter 31, Part 6

  • Learning The Happiest Apocalypse on Earth rules
  • Narrator Principles
  • Adapting a Plot

The plan for tomorrow is to run our first adventure in Planet Albion. We may need to canter through the character generation for one Player, but that should not take too long. Any additional Heroes will be new recruits to the Planet Albion cleaning team. Their first day after basic training may prove rather shocking.

My initial focus for the game prep was to learn the rules for play. This proved relatively straight-forward, as many of the basic principles of Dungeon World also apply to The Happiest Apocalypse on Earth. The damage rules are different, but this is only one area. I now have brief notes and another printout to cover these rules. Happiest also adds insanity rules, which may turn out to be more relevant. I plan to read through my notes tomorrow morning, but overall I made good progress preparing to run the game.

The second aspect of the game I needed was a basic plot to throw at the Players. This means a planned sequence of events for the Players to thwart, along with a selection of Narrator Moves for me to make in response to Player Moves. For the plot outline, I borrowed a scenario from the back of the book, then adapted it for an industrial setting. I also brainstormed the five stages of the Industrial Park maze. Lost guests and confused Albioneers seem an obvious challenge for the Players to overcome.

I copied out lists of Narrator Moves, so they should be easy to reference during the game. These are really just prompts for improv during the game. Along with a refresher of the rules tomorrow morning, I will browse through these improv suggestions. A little more thought about the Industrial setting will also stand me in good stead for the game. All this good work through the day means I avoid the need for a rushed evening tonight. If it all goes well, then maybe the Players will want another session at Planet Albion next week.

Happy Gaming

The Prep in Progress series comprises short summaries of my prep for the ongoing Tales of the Hero Wars campaign.
