Songs of Ulubrae: Chapter 33

Keep Faith for All

Morning, Marchday, Secret Week, Delve Season, 1017.

The Heroes united in Sartokna’s office to discuss recent events. Arrluk was praised for his efforts diverting Umiaq from raiding the Proculus Tower for the artefact. Sartokna then consulted with the Ambassador, who confirmed news of the planned invasion. Sartokna also raised the issue of Umiaq’s behaviour and convinced his mother that an intervention is needed. Ambassador Qigukna agreed to send to Castle Lead for a Rune Priest of Zorak Zoran to cleanse her wayward son.

The Ambassador also assigned Sartokna the task of liaising with the Temple of Sol Invictus to provide ceremonial trolls for the forthcoming festival. Helegion and Arrluk met with Diodotius Marmeus a gnome clerk at the Temple. Diodotius explained the ceremony needed an “army of night” equipped with “Weapons of Darkness”. If this army could include a few trollkin to sacrifice as part of the ceremony, then this would be very helpful.

Secondly, the Festival of Sol Invictus also needed a lone troll hero wearing a “Cloak of Night”. Diodotius described this hero as appearing fierce, yet proving to be a clumsy and farcical opponent. Helegion and Arrluk agreed to these terms, much to the anger of Adlartok when they were explained to him. The details of the agreement sent Adlartok into a berserk frenzy, where he wrecked much of the furniture in Arrluk’s office.

The eerie sound of dragonsong drifted over the city. Arrluk heard echoes of his name in the song, although nobody else could hear them. The Heroes hurried down to Peregrinnium and out of Ulubrae. There on the strange plinth stood a tailed dragonnewt with a missing hand.

The dragonnewt was Kurigalzu Talks to Mortals. Xe spoke with Arrluk about his destiny to call forth the tower. During the stilted conversation, Arrluk had flashes of an icy tower in Sigil and the tapering spire of Ptolus. For a moment, he felt as though he had horns, but the sensation quickly passed. Kurigalzu asked Sartokna about her choice, but she had no answer for the dragonnewt.

Arrluk then climbed onto the plinth and began singing the song deep in his soul. His amazement at singing like a dragonnewt was immediately surpassed when the tower began to grow around him. The Heroes standing among the fungus were blinded by a warm, red light. When they looked again, a jagged-topped tower stood before them.
