Prep in Progress; Chapter 36, Part 1

The Prep in Progress entries are short summaries of my prep for my on-going campaign The Tales of the Hero Wars.

I was pleased with how the HeroQuest Session played out on Saturday.  Yet again, there was no direct opposition from me, in the sense of NPCs to be defeated.  However, the Players found plenty of things to do for themselves.  A Compass of Ambraga was eventually discovered in a locked chest, and then it was back to the ship.  The Arcane Ritual to bind Ragnarr the Storm Mage to the Compass turned out as well as could be expected for any ritual involving Dark Wyrd and a mage with the Flaw of Lightning Strikes Allies.

Ragnarr further complicated his reputation by having one scroll fall apart in his hands, while the second book turned out to be one of Shan’s Grimoires.  This Player-created twist in the tale was as great as they always are, and gave the Heroes an interesting conundrum.  Rather against expectations, Ragnarr insisted that it should be destroyed.  This was achieved spectacularly with a vial of Liquid Sun, although it obliterated the cutter in the process.  I just love it when the Players take such an active role in directing the plot, and I shall need to think hard about the consequences of the loss of the Grimoire.

Yer darn tootin’ it was a surprise. Nearly floored at least one of the other PCs who was just getting ready for a big debate on what to do with it. Good session, thanks!

      Hi Si,

Yes, but is this enough to redeem Ragnarr? I suspect not, but it might be the start of the process.

      Glad that you had fun

He killed Elehil’s ward. Redemption is going to involve something rather more significant than burning someone else’s book.

          Hi Si,

          True, very true.

Yet there is some good in him too. He is aiding the main Quest, which complicates the situation.

More good role-playing opportunities are heading our way, hopefully
